When it comes to design, people usually think about how it looks, or how it feels. For me, I've learned to never compromise design quality.

Enjoy the process, always

Design is seriously supposed to be fun and enjoyable! I struggled a lot to remember this. Let's don't forget it. Funny enough, folk music and indie artists play a huge role in my design process. I'd like to create a jazzy environment where I'll bring true imagination and creativity into my ideas and concepts. It sounds something like this…

chapter 01

The art of crafting with care

Starting out as a graphic designer in 2018, I've learned and worked in an environment where designs are assessed by how they look. While the aesthetic aspect of a design is naturally very controversial due to parties' subjective opinions, I've met designers and clients who applied the same approach in creating designs for digital products.

At first, this may sound like a natural approach in design, but by paying too much attention to the aesthetic aspect, they were neglecting the more important factors, such as the product's accessibility, adaptiveness, and feasibility. Without these core factors in mind, a product designer is actually a graphic designer, and developers will have to compensate for the deficiency — usually, with a very technical and user-unfriendly approach.

Gradually, I shifted my interest more to building a sustainable design system — where I get to meticulously build designs to ensure visual consistency, user accessibility, and design output quality for products. I genuinely believe the impact of crafting with care, motivated by the urge of "doing things the right way", will enable businesses to consistently deliver valuable experiences in a sustainable way.

chapter 02

Design, not as a job, but a lifestyle

As a principle of life, I believe in what so-called "How you do one thing is how you do everything". Not sure where I learned it from, and so sorry if I'm quoting it wrong, but I guess you understand the idea. The act of keeping my work tidy is just the result of how my brain was trained to keep things in my life well organized. You can think of me as a bit of an OCD person, but my thinking and principles only apply to my own approaches, and I have no interest in influencing others to be — I guess, as OCD as I am.

From my experiences, I benefit quite a lot from being a tidy-oriented person. In the design field, I feel like the actual efficiency of my designs is more important than what I eventually earn from it. By efficiency, I refer to how it impacts the end result: aesthetic, accessibility, feasibility, performance, scalability, sustainability,… or any other project-specific needs. I know that eventually, I'll earn something for my efforts, but it's a much nicer achievement for me if the product works flawlessly, and can somehow strike users as a very well-designed and trustworthy product. It eventually proves that I've done things right, kept my work tidy, and learned something valuable from it.

At the end of the day, there's no such thing as "right" or "wrong", there're only what's working and what's not. I think it's more important to keep myself fueled with creativity, by doing what I resonate with, and building what I genuinely believe in.

chapter 03

Anyway, the adventure goes on

I'll be completely honest, I've been in a love-hate relationship with my design career. I've worked as an in-house graphic designer doing UI/UX works, been in a startup that sounded very promising at first, just to lose interest in design for not seeing any practical result after a long time. I have even tried counter-thinking my own approaches to keep a stable job that paid me well. I guess we all have to be here and there for a bit, and while my background is not the best, I kinda learned to appreciate it for driving me to grow and improve beyond my imagination.

I've promised myself that I'll never compromise my feeling for design again. I was lucky to have met a respectful Design Director, who influenced me to be passionate in design, and always take pride in my work. He's the living proof that there's somewhere in the design space, where I can always be happy and passionate about my work, every single day.

It's been a 5-month gap from my last job. I guess it's about time to take what I've learned into implementation. This time, I'll find a place where I'll feel right at home, I'll be open to learn, to work, and to connect — hopefully, more passionately than ever.

That's it.
